Welcome to geotahoe.org

When I moved to Tahoe in 1999, I wondered who was taking such good care of Lake Tahoe. It quickly became clear that the clarity of the lake and health of the surrounding forests was in the hands of residents, businesses and visitors. Human behaviors are what would sustain and preserve this gift from Nature. In 1997 National Geographic’s Center for Sustainable Destinations realized the importance of preserving the world’s most beautiful settings, and built a blueprint to incentifythe tourism industry to embrace the 12 principals of geotourism and preserve the unique characters of these special places for generations.

The Director of the Center challenged Tahoe leaders to take action not lose the beauty and magic of this area and make Lake Tahoe a geotourism sustainable destination. I volunteered to liaison the effort along with a few others. Together we are at the beginning stages of implementing a strategy that begins by compiling a list of “geotourism” assets unique to the Tahoe region. As the next step requires additional people to form an Exploratory Steering Committee, if you are interested please contact us at info@geotahoe.org
